It's really very simple if you allow it to be. What of the one that has a blade half way between, not specialized but doing both roles well enough? If you wanted "the best weapon for confined spaces", some kind of shortsword would likely beat out all competition, similar to a gladius.ĭifferent situations call for different weapons, but some weapons that are designed for certain situations are naturally outperformed by other designs. If you wanted "the best sword for one-handed thrusting", there will be specific rapier designs within certain parameters (weight, length, etc), because reach is still a major factor in combat. Some weapon designs were made for the same purpose, but now we have the hindsight and foresight to decide which ones were inferior. The fact is, despite the change in society, technology, and knowledge, the weapons still function the same way. We, as modern people, aren't restricted as the users and designers of these weapons were. What you, and people like you, are trying to do, is separate designs by time period, country of origin, and "name". When I look at this weapon and this weapon, I believe they are both designed to "chop into" people.ĭifferent times, places, and materials, but the designs share a common intention. There's a fundamental problem wherein we are trying to pigeon hole smooth transitions mixed and matched across space and time. Kama, or any military picks(usually combined on the warhammer) are another category. Warhammers, though similar to maces and clubs, I'd put in a separate category.Īxes, again, are their own category to me. Maces, whether they be flanged, spiked, rounded, or any kind of club or variation on that idea. I'll put flails in a separate, but similar category. For simplicity, I'll add rope/chain darts. I'd also put sectioned chain whips, as well as the three section staff and any of their variants in this category. Nunchucks, or whatever you want to call them. Might as well include shuriken, kunai, darts, and any other miscellaneous small items. Weird shields, like the madu buckler, the lantern shield, or spiked shields in general. I'll add the falx, since it seems to be unique. Weird "swords" that I don't know where to put: Weird Spanish cavalry sword, the Chinese hook sword, whatever this is, sickle swords, and this thing. The katar and pata gauntlet/ pata sword(not sure what to call it) deserve their own category. I'll add Deer horn knives, because it makes sense to. I'll put push-daggers, "brass" knuckles, any spiked gloves, and wrist blades in a category together, because they're all so weird. I'd put the kukri and the smatchet in a separate category, because they're don't quite fit into shortsword/machete/knife categories.ĭaggers and knives, even the karambit, sai, and stiletto can go into one category of weapons. In my mind, these might be the double-edged machete-length weapons. The gladius, leaf-bladed xiphos, basically anything bigger than a knife, but still smaller than a full-size sword. Shortswords are a separate category to me. Single-edged cut-and-thrust swords, like the messer, the Chinese broadsword, the backsword, and many others.įalchions, and machete-shaped weapons, from anywhere, any country or region, as long as they're designed to chop. Even though many of the "thrust" swords technically fit in this category, they are separate in my mind, but feel free to disagree. Hand-and-a-half, longsword, greatsword, and miscellaneous alike.ĭouble-edged cut-and-thrust straight swords in general, including viking-style swords, Scottish basket-hilted broadsword or schiavona, and various other double-edged swords. I'll put all other two-handed swords in one big category for now. Swords designed to thrust such as the rapier, but also the sidesword, this type of jian, cavalry British 1912, and even smallswords. One-handed sabre, whether it have more curve an abrupt curve, or little curve. Katana, and it's longer or shorter counterparts. I'll start with my own list (in no particular order), in case a suitable one isn't found, so feel free to link a list or add to my own: Also ignoring most projectile weapons (some thrown are included), all chemical weapons, and any electrified weapons. Because two-handed swords overlap so heavily with polearms, I'd like to ignore those as well for the most part (since weapons such as the dadao could be argued into a range of categories, for example). Polearms are a mess of different head shapes and names for very similar things, so I'd like to avoid those for the most part. Is there a list with pictures somewhere, that includes every type of hand-weapon? There are a lot of weapons that are basically different takes on the same thing (such as Tabak toyok compared to nunchaku), so I'd like to approach this in categories rather than individual names.
